Americans think their country is corrupt

Donald Trump has achieved yet another amazing milestone.

According to a Gallup poll across the 38 member countries in the OECD has found that 89% of Americans say government corruption is widespread with substantial majorities of Republicans, Democrats and independents agreeing.

Gallup said American’s perception of government corruption in the US is at its highest level in 20 years – up 10% since last year and well above readings in the 72% to 79% range between 2010 and 2025.

83% of Republicans think corruption is widespread, 90% of Independents and 91% of Democrats.

The median level for the 38 members of the OECD is 60% – down from 69% sinch 2009.

Gallup said: “The US has increasingly diverged from other advanced economies of government corruption. Although strong majorities of Republicans and Democrats perceived government corruption is widespread, it is likely for different reasons.”

“In early years of this trend, countries such as Greece, Hungary and the Czech Republic all saw scores above 90%. But over time the highest levels of perceived corruption across the bloc have gradually fallen.”

…and the US is in strange company. Only four countries out of 132 in which Gallup has posed the question annually only four countries have scored nominally above 89% – Lebanon in 2024, Peru in 2025 and Ghana and Nigeria.

Gallup found that Americans perceptions of business corruption have also increased this year. American perceptions of business corruption have increased by 8% to 71%. That is 18 points lower than business perceptions.

Perceptions of government corruption are now higher in America than at any time in 20 years.

Perhaps one of Gallup’s most significant findings is that, despite widespread polarisation in the US – more than in most countries – that “this one case where bipartisanship reflects shared alarm as much as shared consensus.”.

Meanwhile a new UMass Amherst poll shows just 84% of Trump 2024 voters sticking with him in a hypothetical do-over election.

“That compares to 94% of Harris voters staying with Harris. Similarly, Navigator Research finds 18% of Trump’s voters say they regret their vote, chiefly over Iran, the cost of living, and corruption and abuse of power by the White House.

Gallup also said 2026 is looking like an above-average reaction against the party in power. In Gallup’s latest poll, U.S. adults now lean 49% toward the Democrats and just 39% toward Republicans — the biggest gap for Democrats since the peak of the financial crisis in 2008.
