Amidst the Trump regime’s destruction of valued institutions is the decision that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (Noaa) will no longer track of the cost of climate crisis-fueled weather disasters.
Noaa has provided daily weather forecasts, severe storm warnings and climate movements for many years.
The US Associated Press (9/5) reported that Noaa would no longer update its Billion-Dollar and Climate service beyond 2024. It’s data – which goes back to 1980 will be archived and, no doubt, difficult to access.
Noaa has tracked hundreds of major events across the country including destructive hurricanes, hailstorms and droughts.
Trump has already fired hundreds of weather forecasters arguing they are not needed because climate change is a ‘hoax’ of course. A view which suits some of his major donors.
Importantly Noaa gathers information from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and insurance data to estimate costs from individual disasters. Fema, of course, is already marked for dismantling. There are other sources such as insurance agencies and data from other nations but Noaa is the gold standard.
We are already seeing the impacts of climate change in the US, Australia and the world. Despite that, the Trumps, Duttons (and whoever replaces him as Liberal Party Leader) are still practicising climate denial – following in the Abbott tradition – but perhaps not as vehemently in declaring it ‘crap’,
For ordinary Australians and Americans insurance will be harder to get and more expensive. Seas will engulf coastal areas. Storms and bushfires will become endemic.
The unintended consequences will be huge.
…and you will have to be very lucky to get insurance at an affordable price or to get claims settled quickly and easily.
